The Potential Benefits (and drawbacks) of Logging Out.

social media breakWhat are the possible long-term benefits? You can connect with people (and the real world) in a real way. Too much social media use may actually make you feel disconnected—not lonely, but still alone. The constant humblebragging of the posts you see and read may breed envy, encourage your competitive side, or make you feel like you lead a lessthrilling, less-satisfying life.

What do you risk losing? Social media has become an invaluable pathway toward friendship and networking, and living without it could cut you off from experiences and opportunities that could be positively life-altering. You also risk being less informed –about the world, and those around you. Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms are half social journal, half personalized news outlet.

Could it hurt your career and friendships? A long hiatus from social media will not render you a luddite in the eyes of your boss or your friends. They may applaud your decision. Taking old-school steps to stay in touch with you may seem like an inconvenience, but as long as you have email and a phone, you remain reasonably connected.

Why not try it for a week? Be sure to give your friends and colleagues advance notice. The break you take may change your perspective. You may come back to social media with a new outlook on what really matters—and what doesn’t.
